What does Superfood mean?

A superfood is a typically a plant-based product that is characterized by a dense concentration of minerals and amino acids that have been shown to be highly beneficial to the human body. They are said to be high in things like antioxidants and flavenoids as well.

Popular superfoods include acai berries, kale, wheatgrass, quinoa, and blueberries.

‘Superfood’ is a modern buzzword used in marketing to bring attention to the healthiest fruits and vegetables. The category is constantly changing as more superfoods are ‘discovered’ or reported on in the media.

More Info On Superfood

Some superfoods, like blueberries, are quite easy to grow in home gardens since they do not require any special care or attention. If you’re growing superfoods in a greenhouse, it is recommended to sow the seeds in October or September so the produce will be ready for harvesting in winter.

On the other hand, planters who grow superfoods outdoors should preferably sow their seeds as from February in spring. According to botanists, it’s best to grow the seeds under fleece or glass. Leafy crops such as chard, beet greens, and spinach yield a better crop if planted outdoors in September.

Some superfoods such as alpine strawberries develop best when grown under trees, while kiwi vines thrive best across arches. For blueberries and citrus, planters normally choose to grow them in pots.

The term superfood is often used in conjunction with terms like ‘vegan’, ‘organic’, and ‘gluten-free’ to further promote its wholesome qualities
