Propagation

What does Propagation mean?

Propagation refers to the process of starting new flowers and plants using a plethora of sources, including but not limited to bulbs, seeds, cuttings, or some specific parts of the plant. The method of propagation normally depends on the plant type.

Easy and inexpensive, propagation by an entirely asexual method prevents deviation from the parent plant’s genetics.

More On Propagation

One of the most popular method of plant propagation is stem cutting. Gardeners often cut the stems according to the seasons. For example, woody plants are best propagated during fall, while spring is the best time for herbaceous plants. In propagation, the favored types of stem cuttings are medial, tip, singe eye, cane, heel, and double eye cuttings.

Some gardeners choose to use a heated propagator to create the ideal humid and warm environment to boost the growth of cuttings and seeds. Alternatively, some gardeners might go for a fully electric seed-propagation mat, which is a more expensive but efficient method.

During propagation, it is important to produce roots as quickly as possible to prevent the plant’s death. Air circulation is equally crucial to propagation to keep fungus at bay, hence the importance of a heated or electric propagator.
