Weed

What does Weed mean?

Weed is a term that is often used to refer to marijuana.

The term weed is most commonly used specifically in reference to smoking (i.e. “Let’s go smoke some weed.”). It joins a list of hundreds of other code or slang terms used to refer to cannabis in general. The term ‘weed’ is widely known around the world as a euphemism for cannabis.

Unlike other terms used to denote marijuana, the term weed doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. It’s generic enough to not be regionally specific, and its use has spanned decades and generations.

More Info On Weed

‘Weed’ was first used in a popular 1932 paper called The Chicago Defender. The article called marijuana ‘the weed’. The United Kingdom’s music magazine The Melody Maker wrote the “Song of Weed” and “Reefer Man” later in 1932. In the intro of Reefer Man, weed is referred to in correlation with marijuana.

After the first initial mention of ‘weed’ in reference to marijuana during the 1930s, the term fell out of popularity until the 1980s and 1990s, which is when it became a common slang phrase around the world.

The term weed typically refers to the marijuana plant’s ability to grow wild all over the world. The plant’s history is deeply rooted in virtually every culture. In the early 1930s, a widespread migration of Mexicans into the United States fueled racial hatred and caused politicians to try to associate cannabis usage with the immigrant Mexicans. In their effort to criminalize cannabis, they started to call cannabis ‘marijuana’, which they translated into ‘loco weed.’

Weed was called loco weed in an effort to scare the public into believing that it would make a user crazy after use. This was one of the first historic steps that government officials took in their push to outlaw cannabis and declare it a harmful drug.
