Tilth

What does Tilth mean?

Tilth refers to the physical condition of gardening soil for cultivation. The factors that determine soil tilth include, but are not limited to, water drainage, rate of water infiltration, aeration, moisture content, stability, and the formation of the aggregated particles in the soil.

More Info On Tilth

Gardeners should perform occasional checks on soil tilth because it is prone to rapid change. Factors that can affect tilth include moisture and changes in climate. Soils with good tilth normally allow for water movement and air infiltration, which consequently encourage root growth and flower quality. Good quality soil holds nutrients and water to boost growth.

Overturning, stirring, and digging the soil can help prepare the soil. Crop rotation has been shown to boost tilth in previously compacted planting areas.
