Yucca

What does Yucca mean?

The yucca is an edible tuberous root commonly consumed in Africa and arid areas of Central America. Rich in carbohydrates, yuccas are extremely starchy and contain plenty of vitamins, nutrients, and minerals. According to researchers, the yucca root includes resveratrol and steroidal saponins, which are known for their important health benefits.

Yuccas are more commonly baked or boiled, but occasionally eaten raw.

More Info On Yucca

According to Turkish researchers, yuccas have been shown to ease diabetes symptoms while promoting good cholesterol readings. This plant is also known for its anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory properties. According to Mexican researchers, the plant is packed with active components that can actually protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Medicinally, the plant can be used for its antioxidant properties.

It is relatively easy to care for yucca plants since they are versatile enough to be grown both outdoors and indoors. The spineless yucca actually grows best indoors, provided that it is properly maintained, watered, and trimmed. It is advisable not to place the plant in a saucer of water because this may encourage rotting around the roots and stems. Because yucca plants have extremely sharp leaves, they should be kept away from small children and pets.

By the same token, gardeners should wear gloves when pruning and caring for the plants. These plants should be pruned once the fruits start to appear and the plant stops flowering.
