T5 Fluorescent Lamp

What does T5 Fluorescent Lamp mean?

The T5 fluorescent lamp is a common grow light used to cultivate cannabis. The light derives its name from the fact that it is a tubular fluorescent lamp that measures ⅝ of an inch in diameter.

Typically, the tubes are arranged in a panel so that they are located parallel to each other. The bulbs run cool so the grower doesn’t have to worry about inadvertently burning his marijuana plants. This also allows the lamps to be placed close to the plant’s surface to maximize the light’s power.

Unlike other grow lights, T5 fluorescent lamps do not consume a large amount of electricity.

More On T5 Fluorescent Lamp

T5 fluorescent lamps are available in a large variety of brands. They can produce 100 lumens per watt. Unlike other grow light options, the T5 fluorescent lamp uses less energy but produces more light. In most situations, they require about 60 per cent less energy to operate than other types of grow lights but continue to give ample lighting.

Typically, the T5 has a lifespan of about 20,000 hours. The lights produce very little heat, which allows growers to position the lamps about two to six inches from the top growth of their marijuana plants without worrying about the lamps accidentally burning the plants.

The lack of heat also aids growers in saving money on exhaust systems because they don’t have to vent out any excessive heat. The close proximity of the lights to the plants saves room and allows for a smaller grow room or grow tent.

T5 fluorescents are best suited for young plants, either seedlings or clones. Many growers then switch to a bulb richer in blue and red spectrum, such as high-pressure sodium or metal halide bulbs, which are both forms of high-intensity discharge lighting (HID). Beyond these grow light options, growers also may used LEDs, plasma, or induction lights. Growers must be careful to select bulbs specifically designed for plants, rather than common household lights.
