Cannabivarin – 402: A non-psychoactive Cannabinoid

Cannabivarin – 402: A non-psychoactive Cannabinoid

Cannabivarin – CBV is one of the major compounds of Cannabis Sativa. Even though there is not much research on Cannabivarin, we still have a little bit information about the compound. This information can serve as the starting point to understand the medical benefits of Cannabivarin.

So far, we are familiar with the chemical composition of the compound. Cannabivarin is also called Cannabivarol. It is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. This compound is usually found in minor quantity in the hemp plant – Cannabis Sativa. Cannabivarin is an analog of famous Cannabinol – CBN along with the side chain that is shortened by 2 methylene bridges. Cannabivarin is an oxidation product of THCV, THV – tetrahydrocannabivarin.

Cannabinoids are the class of varied chemical compounds which instantly act on cannabinoid receptors, present on cells, and are responsible to repress neurotransmitter release in the human brain. Such receptor proteins comprise endocannabinoids – something that is naturally produced in the animals and humans body. These receptor proteins also have phytocannabinoids, present in cannabis as well as some other plants, and synthetic cannabinoids that are chemically manufactured.

As far as the chemistry of the Cannabivarin – CBV is concerned; Cannabivarin contains no stereoisomer or double bond isomers. The compound is not yet scheduled by the Convention on Psychotropic Substances as per its legal status.

In the United States, Cannabivarin is not even scheduled at the federal level. Indeed it could be taken as an analog of THC. In this case, possession and sales that is intended for human consumption can be prosecuted under the “Federal Analog Act”.

Molecular Formula of Cannabivarin

Cannabivarin or CBV has the molecular formula of C19H22O2. It has the molecular weight of 282.383 g/mol.

Cannabivarin is categorized as the phytocannabinoid. The compound is the constituent of hashish and just like other cannabis compounds; it is also isolated from Cannabis Sativa plant. Since it is regulated as the Schedule I compound in the entire United States, the product is only intended for the research as well as forensic application purpose and not for consumption. This is because the therapeutic and physiological effects of Cannabivarin are not yet researched.

Cannabivarin is a Natural Cannabinoid

As stated earlier, Cannabivarin is categorized as phytocannabinoid. Well, phytocannabinoids are also known as natural cannabinoids, classical cannabinoids, and herbal cannabinoids. They are only known to be present naturally in cannabis plant and in higher quantity. Phytocannabinoid are concentrated in a more viscous resin which is produced in glandular structures that are known as trichomes.

Along with cannabinoids, the resin is also rich in terpenes that are largely responsible to produce the odor of the cannabis plant.

The Scope of Further Research

The research with regards to different compounds of cannabis plant is not yet completed. In fact, there are several compounds present in the cannabis plant that we don’t even yet recognize even slightly such as Cannabiorcool.

The limited research work on different compounds of cannabis is due to its prevailing legalization issue, all over the globe. While we don’t know if marijuana can be legalized considering its psychoactive effects, but we hope the research work continues until we truly understand the properties of this unique plant.
